Whimsical Words of Comfort

Whilst the actress Maureen Lipman's late husband, writer Jack Rosenthal was in hospital being treated for Myeloma she kept her mind occupied during sleepless nights and long journeys to visit him in hospital, by writing what she called Daft Verse. Later, along with accompanying cartoons by talented artists, many of these verses were compiled into a book called 'The Gibbon's in Decline but the Horse is Stable' (see Book Reviews), all Royalties of which are donated to the International Myeloma Foundation UK. Ms Lipman has very kindly given permission for us to include a couple of her verses on this page (Editor's choice). If journal writing isn't your thing, writing Daft Verse might be.

The Tortoise streaked into the lead,

The Hare was under stress,

I made my bid and lost ten quid,

A bad Hare day I guess.

Ten trembling Turtles stand in rows,

A Hedgehog t'wards them rolling.

They get a spike, we get a strike

And call it 'Terrapin Bowling'.
