Monthly Editorial - January 2007

A message from the Editor,

Today, 14 January, whilst on a mild, sunny Sunday pre-lunchtime drink with some our Sunday Scene Breakfast Club members, we were amazed to see a single, golden headed daffodil, pink and purple primulas and tiny violets all shamelessly in bloom. It reminded each of us how important it is to have something to plan for or look forward to – in this case the early flowers heralding the end of short, dreary winter days, of spring and a time for renewal.

The Sunday Scene concept came to me as no more than a glimmer of an idea whilst sitting alone on a palm fringed beach in Hawaii, just nine months after my husband died. Visiting this incredibly beautiful island and exploring its culture was the experience of a lifetime for someone who’d never been further than the Continent – the first challenge I set myself as I moved through bereavement. Since then that concept has occupied many waking hours (day and night) and taken shape, first as a book in which I shared my experiences, then the setting up of the very first Sunday Scene Breakfast Club currently serving people in my home area and now the Sunday Scene website which I hope will reach out to many more widowed people nationally – and even beyond!

Not everyone would want or feel able to plan for a project as challenging as this but in looking ahead, planning in advance for and beyond those emotional roller-coaster anniversary days and giving ourselves permission to arrange some pleasurable activities, we can all take positive steps to keep ourselves motivated, active and involved.

My vision and passion is to support and encourage you to be joyful for the life of your late partner, to live the life you now have for all its worth and dare to become all that you can be!
