Sheila Hancock writes with great honesty and integrity, telling of their individual lives, together and apart, intertwining the last year of John’s life. She describes the aching sense of loss and pain she experienced after his death, as she tunnels her way through the darkness of bereavement.  Her gradual acceptance that those we have lost live on in us, offers great comfort to those themselves coping with bereavement.

The author finishes with a poem from the book “The Smoke Jumper,” by Nicholas Evan. Its last few lines provide such a positive focus:-

“Be still.
 Close your eyes.
 Breathe.
Listen to my footfalls in your heart.
I am not gone but merely walk in you.”
